  This Sanctuary is located in the Morigaon district, about 30 kilometers from Guwahati, Assam. It is also famed as ‘Bharatpur of the East’. The place covers an area of about 40 sq. kilometers.

This place is home to the rarest population of one-horned rhinos worldwide. Other wildlife, including wild buffalo, wild boar, leopard, etc. One can witness lush greenery and wilderness here. It’s a landlocked sanctuary that allows tourists to get in touch with the state’s local communities.

Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary is located in Jorhat, Assam. Its other recognizable names are Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary and Hoollongapar Reserved Forest. It was established in 1997 and is spread over an area of about 20 sq. Kilometers.

 This sanctuary has the highest population of Gibbons. The place is home to many apes, including the Bengal slow Loris, eastern Assamese macaque, capped langur, western hoolock gibbon, etc.

The best time to visit this sanctuary is October to March. For viewing wildlife, the morning time will be the best one.

It’s compulsory to have a guide and a forest guide; no vehicles are allowed inside the sanctuary.

Entry fees are ₹250/- per person and an extra ₹500/- for DSLR cameras.

Assam State zoo cum botanical garden

It was established in the year 1957, occupying an area of about 430 acres of land. The place is truly a mesmerizing collection of animal exhibits; museums, reptile houses, the Botanical garden, the Herbarium collection, and the Natural forest. 

The Zoo timings are 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. It remains closed on Friday. The entry fee varies for the age groups and citizenship.

Best National Parks in Assam

Kaziranga National Park

This Park was established in 1905 and is located in Kanchanaburi, Assam. It occupies an area of around 1,000 sq. Kilometres.  

The forests, grasslands, and wetlands present in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river give shelter to rich species of flora like Indian gooseberry, the cotton tree, Kumbhi, elephant Apple and fauna, including the largest population of one-horned rhinoceros, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Hoolock Gibbon, Ganges- Dolphins.

UNESCO declared the Kaziranga National Park a World Heritage Site in 1985.

Manas National Park

Manas National Park is located in Govardhana, Assam. Established in 1990, this biological hotspot covers an area of about 40,000 hectares. It is bounded to the North by the forests of Bhutan. 

The Park includes beautiful habitats of rich species like The Bengal florican, pygmy hog, swamp deer, tigers, one-horned rhinos, elephants etc.

This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an Elephant Reserve, a Project Tiger reserve and a Biosphere Reserve.

Orang National Park

Established in 1985 as a Sanctuary, it was declared a National Park in 1999.

It is also called ‘Mini Kaziranga’ because of the relevant landscape in the Kaziranga National Park.

It is located in the Sonitpur and Darrang districts of Assam and covers an area of about 80 sq. Kilometers.

The place is home to various mammals, reptiles, migratory birds and other floral species, including Civet Cat, Tiger, Rhinoceros, Dolphins, King Cobra, Pintail Duck etc.

Haunted Places in Assam

Haunted Lounge, Jorhat

It is said that evil powers rule this area, and some abnormal voices and screaming can be heard at night.

Bogijuli Camp

This site is located in the Nameri Forest Reserve and is said to be scary because of the voices heard by the tourists there. Tourists claimed that there was a woman who used to laugh and cry at night, but at the time of investigation, nothing such was founded.

The Banyan Tree, Puranigudam

During the Assamese-Burmese war in 1820, the Burmese used to kill and torture the local Assamese villagers, tied up to trees, and set on fire to burn them.

The spirits of those harassed villagers haunted this place.

Mayong Village

Kamakhya Temple
